On February 23, 2026, at the Board of Supervisors’ first fire sprinkler mandate hearing, we mobilized over 350 residents to make public comment. The message was clear: retrofit costs that can reach $300,000 per unit are unaffordable, especially during an affordability crisis where mandates like this risk displacing the very people they’re meant to protect. Thank you to everybody who came out to speak on this critical issue.

In response to these concerns, the Committee approved a 5-year extension on key deadlines. Homeowners will now have until 2032 instead of 2027 to obtain permits for sprinkler work.

While this extension is a step in the right direction, more work is needed and homeowners deserve further relief.

We continue to call for the following changes to the retrofit mandate:

  • The creation of a formal Technical Advisory Committee of engineers, architects, and fire safety experts to assess retrofit feasibility building by building.
  • pause on enforcement until the committee releases its findings.

It is critical that we keep the momentum going. The Board of Supervisors needs to hear that residents want practical, feasible fire safety solutions and not mandates that destabilize housing.
